    LIGHT & SHADE

    Graham Abbott conductor
    Lily Begg piano

    Beethoven - Egmont Overture
Grieg - Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16
    Schumann - Symphony No. 2 in C, Op. 61

We are delighted to welcome Graham Abbott as guest conductor in a concert including the ever-popular Grieg Piano Concerto with young Bendigo pianist, Lily Begg, recently back from studying in Berlin.

Egmont is a powerful & expressive piece showing Beethoven’s own political support for the valiant stance of young idealist killed for standing up against oppression. Later, it became the unofficial anthem of the 1956 Hungarian revolution.

Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor is well loved by audiences throughout the world and immediately recognised by its opening chords. Full of soaring melodies and virtuosic brilliance, this work is sure to delight Bendigo audiences too.
Completing this concert is the wonderful Second Symphony of Robert Schumann, commencing with a sombre brass chorale and finishing with a nod to Beethoven’s Ode to Joy from his 9th Symphony, truly Light and Shade in its entirety.
